Lithiophilite is a lithium mineral with formula LiMnPO4 that make a
serie with triphylite, the iron end member. The mineral with intermediate
composition is known as sicklerite Li(Mn,Fe)PO4. Usually it is found in
microcrystals of orange colour in pegmatites and is quite difficult differentiate
the three minerals.
When is included in quartz has a characteristic blade shape very similar
to Biotite crystals. In general Biotite is more greenish and Lithiophilite
is more brownish, but altered biotites are also brown. A distinctive character
is that Lithiophilite shows a lace of curved micro-fractures at the edge
of the crystal while biotite do not.
